Robin Williams: an unlikely stylist

Not only was I sad to finish my family holiday in France, but on my return I was upset to learn that the quite unique and talented entertainer Robin Williams had died. My first encounter of Mr Williams was of him acting as the eccentric and unconventional nanny ‘Mrs Doubtfire’-it was also my introduction to House of Pains’ ‘Jump Around’, a personal fave party tune. Whilst his many performances and quotes have been much celebrated over the last few days, as a fashion blogger who promotes sustainable fashion I would like to highlight one particular quote which the fashion world should take to heart. In the 1991 film The Fisher King Williams plays a homeless man called Parry who is searching for the Holy Grail. Jack manages to strike an unlikely friendship with the suicidal main character Jack (played by Jeff Bridges) and during the story the two provide much advice and comfort to each other. One day Parry turns to Jack and declares:

“There’s three things in this world that you need: Respect for all kinds of life, a nice bowel movement on a regular basis, and a navy blazer.”

Although Williams was rarely applauded for his wardrobe, all men would be wise to follow this tit bit of never-ending style. Following this thought, I believe Williams would have looked great in Hardy Amies’ single breasted evening jacket made of a bright navy monogram jaquard silk and wool material which is part of the upcoming AW14 collection. Admittedly, it is perhaps rather more dressy than the navy jacket the character Parry had in mind but then again, Williams had red carpets to grace. I wonder if comedy heaven has red carpets.
